Starbound is a 2D sandbox adventure that mixes space exploration, resource gathering, crafting, base building, and light action RPG elements inside a procedurally generated universe of planets. The custom engine is sensitive to these loads, especially during dense planetary exploration or when your base contains many interactive objects and NPCs. Common pain points include stutters or frame-time spikes when entering crowded or heavily modded areas, longer loading times for large worlds, and occasional simulation lag in multiplayer where one PC hosts the session. Many builders mistakenly focus on high-end graphics cards expecting 3D-style demands, only to find the GPU sits largely idle while the CPU and RAM become the limiting factors for long, comfortable play sessions.
